Since June 2024, Germany has offered a new points-based visa called the Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card) — allowing skilled workers from non-EU countries to enter Germany and spend up to a year searching for a job, without needing a contract first. It's a significant shift from the old system and one of the most talked-about immigration changes in Europe.
Who is it for?
The Chancenkarte targets qualified professionals from outside the EU who want to work in Germany but don't yet have a job offer. Instead of needing an employer to sponsor you, you score points based on your profile and apply independently.
The points system
You need at least 6 points to qualify. Points are awarded across four categories:

⚡ Fast track: If your qualification is fully recognised in Germany and you have 2 years' experience, you may qualify without the points system at all.
What you can do on the Chancenkarte
- Stay in Germany for up to 1 year to search for work
- Work up to 20 hours per week in any job during your search (trial work also allowed)
- Switch to a full work visa if you find a qualifying job — without leaving Germany
What you cannot do
- Work full-time in your skilled profession (until you switch to a work visa)
- Bring family members under this visa category
- Extend beyond 1 year without finding employment
How to apply
Apply at the German embassy or consulate in your home country. You'll need proof of your qualifications, financial reserves (currently around €12,000 to show you can support yourself for the year), health insurance, and accommodation confirmation in Germany.
Degree recognition
Your qualification must be recognised or at least recognisable in Germany. Use the official Recognition in Germany portal to check your specific degree before applying — this step is often the longest part of the process.
